Visit to The Hall, Bradford on Avon

I am arranging a guided tour of The Hall, Bradford on Avon.  The Hall has some fascinating history – a Jacobean mansion with notable architecture, a fascinating industrial heritage and unique stories of the Moulton family and its last resident, Dr Alex Moulton the celebrated engineer. The Trustees have decided to keep The Hall as Alex Moulton left it so it really is a unique experience to walk in the rooms and get a real sense of how he lived and worked.  More detail at

The visit is provisionally arranged fror 2pm on Tuesday 10th September 2019. It will last for between 90 minutes and 2 hrs depending on the number of questions.  The cost will be £12 each and is limited to 10 people however if there is sufficient interest I hope to arrange other tours.

Transport will be by private cars; I recommend car sharing where possible as I suspect parking may be limited.  If you are interested please  email.

Potential for new groups.

One of our members is hoping to start 6 new groups if there is sufficient interest.  The groups are:-

  • Canasta and Play Reading - these could be held in the evening for those busy with grandparent duties.

  • Kitchen Bridge - ‘Kitchen Bridge’ is basic Acol with no conventions played.  Possibly meet in a suitable local hostelry such as the Silk Mercer.

  • Theatre - car shares to theatres in nearby towns Bath, Swindon, Salisbury. An initial meeting would ascertain the types of shows we share an interest in (if any)!

  • Cinema: - similar to Theatre, it’s nice to have a discussion afterwards and share our thoughts over a coffee, in Trowbridge or Swindon.

  • Sunday Lunch - self -explanatory.

If you are interested please see the newsletter for contact details.

Proposed new group  -  Croquet

Croquet is a game suited to any age which can be played by men and women and is becoming increasingly popular. I intend to run a beginners course on Tuesday mornings from 10.00 am to 12 Noon., starting in April. This will be a thirteen week structured course of instruction after which beginners will have a good idea of how to play the game. I did this same course last year and half a dozen members, whilst not yet experts, are now enjoying the game.

Why don’t you come along and join them ?

It is a surprisingly skilful and complex game combining elements of snooker with the tactics of chess. Croquet epitomises a tranquil summer’s afternoon sport. Once the relatively simple strokes have been mastered, the game is both fascinating and fun to play.

The cost will be £10.00 for all thirteen sessions. No special clothing is required  and all equipment needed will be provided. The venue is Urchfont Cricket Club and perhaps we can arrange some car sharing scheme.

If you would like to learn and participate in this interesting and enjoyable game please contact me as soon as possible.
