SKETCHING FOR IMPROVERS -
Group Leader Jeff Meddings
Times they are a Changin’
As you know, I am standing down as Group Leader of this wonderful class. I took over in 2007 and, by Christmas, will have completed the best part of 11 years. During this time some Eighty U3A members have graced our tables and, amazing as it seems, Four stalwarts from my first register - Janet Church, Charles Slater, Margaret Thompson and Antonia Tolhurst, still ‘grace our tables ‘ – such stamina !! There have been 242 sessions with an average attendance of 17.5 at each.
We have peaked at 22 at the Crown Centre with 13 as the lowest. Summer attendances always fall off some but we did manage our record low this year with 3 optimists turning up at Drews Pond during continuous downpour – madness !
Over the years we have visited some 54 summer locations – some of them several times – and these have motivated some of our most satisfying work . The production of 5 Calendars proved very time consuming but equally satisfying as a means for exhibiting our work.
Other useless statistics could include 11 Christmas Parties ; 4114 cups of tea or coffee and no-one ever bothered to monitor the ‘countless biscuits’ without which we could never survive the stress of our Wednesday mornings. We did manage to survive a real crisis when, in May 2011, the Crown Centre cellars flooded and we were relocated (courtesy of Devizes Museum) for a few months while they dried themselves out. Continued improvement has been the result – ALL of YOU – and we Need It To Continue.
Webmaster's note. I picked up this article from the "Sketching for Improvers" web entry update. As you will gather he has run an extremely successful and long-standing group for some years. The Group needs a new group leader - so come on all you 600 Devizes U3A members - someone come forward to succeed him!
Would you like to do something to help the RSPB?
The RSPB is the country’s largest nature conservation charity, inspiring everyone to give nature a home. Together with our partners, we protect threatened birds and wildlife so our towns, coast and countryside will teem with life once again. We play a leading role in BirdLife International, a worldwide partnership of nature conservation organisations.

VISIT TO St FAGANS NATIONAL MUSEUM of HISTORY
We are organising a visit to St Fagans National Museum of History near Cardiff. It is an open-air museum chronicling the historical lifestyle, culture, and architecture of the Welsh people (museum.wales/stfagans/) a bit like the Weald & Downland museum we visited recently but less rural.
We will be travelling by coach leaving from Station Rd car park at 0830 on Tuesday 19 Sep 17. The cost will be £20 each.

National Survey 2017
What are the factors that should determine your right to retain your driving licence?
Research sub-Committee, with the regional research project
advisers, has been looking at ways of encouraging research as an activity for
new, or existing, groups within individual U3As. We have come up with the idea
of a national survey, on a topic of current interest, which will provide a
basis on which a number of other research projects can be run.
We hope that this
survey will stimulate interest in research and provide yet another way for you
to learn, laugh and live.

These would be of interest and available to all upon request, and worth displaying.
